Folding mechanisms vary for the wide variety of different models of  folding bikes and each provides a unique combination of compactness, weight, durability, price and speed. With these bikes, emphasis is largely on comfort, convenience and speed. Some of the better models fold at the frame midpoint. Folding bikes may weigh more than others do and they have additional mass in their frames. This extra mass actually aids the folding process.

There are a variety of different models of bikes available. There are different basic folding styles. This mechanism allows a bike to fold in approximately half. The second folding style includes the use of a triangle hinge in the frame that allows the rear triangle and wheel to be folded and flipped forward under the main frame tube. These mechanisms usually include latches and quick releases, which help to save time while closing up or releasing bikes. This allows bikes to fold or be partly disassembled for packaging into suitcases or cartons for air travel.

What Is The Best Folding Bike?

Executive Summary about Best Folding Bike by Corey Amick

Folding bikes are getting quite popular these days because of their convenience and the increasing number of great models to choose from. So which is the best folding bike out there? For those who value compact size above everything else, there is Areaware's STRiDA LT folding bike. At only 22 pounds and measuring 20 x 45 x 9 inches when folded, you can take this bike just about anywhere. The triangular frame is made up of powder-coated rustproof aluminum backed by a lifetime guarantee, while the drive train is a Kevlar greaseless belt drive that is sure to leave your pants clean. It has 16-inch wheels with cable disc brakes, and even a luggage rack that can hold as much as 13 pounds. This bike is best for those between 5'4" to 6'4" and weighing less than 220 pounds. The one downside to the STRiDA is that it has single speed gears.

For speed demons, there's Dahon's Speed TR. Unlike the super compact STRiDA, this one has a conventional folded-in-half design, and features bigger 20-inch wheels. The 24-speed gears will keep your adrenalin pumping while the chromoly frame is sure to keep your ride smooth and steady. The Speed TR measures 14 x 26.5 x 33 inches when folded.

While fancy features might be handy, some people just want a bike that works. It's a single speed bike with hand brake and coaster brake system on its 20-inch wheels.

  1. I think folding bikes are great for my routine. I can ride it and whenever I want it can easily be folded and put into the trunk of my car. I have a
Montague bike, it has big size wheels and still folds.
